Our Story

Our Beginnings: From Tutoring to TEAM School

In the mid‑1970s, co‑founders Ken Philbrook and Art Steinberg began an in‑home tutoring service that focused on strengthening foundational skills for young learners. As demand grew, the initiative evolved into TEAM School (Tutorial and Educational Assistance in Mississauga) - a non‑denominational private school recognized by the Ontario Ministry of Education. TEAM School served students ages 8–12 who needed academic upgrading, small class sizes, and individualized support to reach grade‑level proficiency.

The Birth of Mentor College

Mentor College emerged as the natural next step for students who had progressed beyond TEAM School’s small‑group instruction and were ready for a more traditional academic setting. Built on the same commitment to personalized teaching and strong fundamentals, Mentor College delivers the Ontario curriculum across the Primary, Intermediate, and High School divisions. The goal was (and remains) to offer a learning environment where small classes, daily monitoring, and experienced educators help students achieve academic excellence from Junior Kindergarten (JK) through to university entrance.

Expanding to Three Campuses

What began as a single program has grown into a multi‑division school community serving 1,600 students across three campuses in Mississauga:

  • Mentor College Primary Campus (JK–Grade 4)
  • Mentor College Main Campus (Grades 5–12)
  • TEAM School (Grades 1–8)

This campus model ensures age‑appropriate learning environments, access to shared facilities and resources, and continuity for families seeking a JK - Grade 12 pathway with proven results, strong communication, and a supportive, student‑centered approach.

Leadership and Vision

Mentor College and TEAM School were founded on a commitment to academic excellence and a caring, student-centered environment - values that continue to guide our leadership today.
