When Grade 10 students Jayden Ramsamooj, Jacob Chau, and Rohan Taneja were assigned their Civics project, they saw it as an opportunity to fully engage themselves in what they saw as their civic duty. The students were assigned to choose an issue or a problem in the community, raise awareness about the issue, and to find a solution.
The boys chose to tackle the problem of plastic pollution. Worried about the damage our plastic waste is doing to our waterways, the students built a website, launched a social media campaign, and reached out to local MPs and MPPs.
Their efforts led to a personal invitation to a town hall by Mississauga-Lakeshore MP Sven Spengmemann – who engaged Rohan, Jayden, and Jacob in discussion and applauded the boys for their effort. Mr. Spengemann encouraged the boys to continue to raise awareness and suggested that they meet again to follow up on their initiative.
